10th c. circular village up on a rock and built round a church tower. It stands out amongst vineyards and woods set against the blue background of the Espinouse mounts. It preserves the medieval charm of narrow streets with medieval doors, basalt ramparts, moulded arcades, mullioned windows, old pentagonal market square, house of the Consuls, the covered entrance to the Rue de la Coste, embossed doors, etc. Its gem is a listed "church-tower-porch" (12th-14th c.), opposite another listed feature, a Spanish Renaissance window, last surviving vestige of a castle where the Chapelle des Pénitents was later built. A cultural centre since 1991 and a fine setting for the highly successful art exhibitions held here. It is also a grand producer of full and generous wines labelled AOC Pézenas.
